Lagos governorship: Tinubu allegedly maintains position on Ambode

- Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has allegedly refused to back down from his resolve to find a replacement for Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in 2019

- The last minute meetings held to salvage Ambode’s governorship position reportedly did not yield results, as Tinubu allegedly refused to budge

- There is, however, some hope that the APC national leader may come around, as he is said to have gone to Lagos to consult with his supporters on the matter

Indications allegedly emerged on Thursday, September 13, that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is yet to back down from his decision to find a replacement for the incumbent governor of Lagos state, Akinwunmi Ambode, in the 2019 gubernatorial election.

According to Punch, a last minute move was made by President Muhammadu Buhari, Oba Rilwan Akiolu and Oyo state governor, Abiola Ajimobi, to save Ambode.

Legit.ng gathers that Tinubu was subsequently summoned to Abuja to meet with the president, following his meeting with Oba Akiolu, which did not produce favourable results.

The Abuja meeting was reportedly influenced by Aisha Buhari, the wife of the president, who was said to have been called on, by members of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials, a body currently being headed by Governor Ambode’s wife, Bolanle.

Details of the meeting remain sketchy; however, it was gathered that Tinubu refused to back down from his alleged resolve to back another individual in 2019.

The APC leader has reportedly thrown his weight behind Jide Sanwoolu, who has already submitted his nomination and expression of interest forms for the governorship, on the platform of the APC.

A source with knowledge of the matter reportedly stated: “The issues are many – alleged sidelining of party elders, the scrapping of PSP waste management initiative, the sacking of highway managers, award of contracts to a few cronies, ignoring advice from party leaders – they are many, and Asiwaju did not see how all could be resolved without Ambode leaving.

“However, the presidency has put pressure on Asiwaju and although the man has yet to back down, there is hope because he has gone back to Lagos to consult with his followers in the mandate group. We hope that all will be well.”
