- Aston Villa are back in the race to sign former Chelsea defender John Terry
- The 37-year-old defender was an important member of the the Villa squad last season
- Terry has been repeatedly linked with a move to Russia Premier League
Aston Villa are considering bringing back former Chelsea captain and defence ace John Terry who was at the Championship side last term.
According to a UK Express report, citing various news channels, the former Three Lions captain played a vital role for the Villans during the 2017/18 campaign that saw them reach the Championship playoff final.
However, the Steve Bruce tutored-side failed to secure promotion to the English topflight after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Fulham at Wembley.
At this point, Terry’s 12-month deal, at Villa Park has come to an end.
In recent weeks, the 37-year-old defender has been frequently linked with a switch to Russia Premier League side Spartak Moscow.
However, Russian news channel UA Tribuna claimed that Terry has already sealed personal terms with Spartak after undergoing routine medicals in Rome.
On the other hand, a UK Daily Star report suggests Terry is not likely to join the Russian outfit as Aston Villa are now back in contention for the experienced defender, who is expected to earn £60,000-a-week at Villa Park.
Interestingly, the Villans failed to bring in a replacement for Terry, since his 12-month contract expired.
At the last count, the Championship side sent Tommy Elphick on season-long loan to Hull City, leaving the Villans short of a defensive back up.
Before the international break, Shefield Wednesday handed Aston Villa an embarrassing 4-1 defeat that left Bruce fuming at the blast of the final whistle.
"Ultimately I take the responsibility because I pick the players, but some of them have got to have a look at themselves too," he said.
"From back to front we were awful in a lot of aspects.
"But I've mentioned it far too many times, it's arguably the worst one I've faced, but that's the way it is.
"We can talk about tactics and 'you don't know what you're doing' and 'dinosaurs are going to come out’. But at the end of the day we didn't put our boots on,” Bruce added.
Meanwhile, NAJ.com previously had reported that Spartak Moscow bound John Terry has declined a move at the last minute to join the Russian side.
The former Chelsea star had trained with the club and was destined to sign a deal before turning down the move at the eleventh hour.
The ex-England captain took to his social media handle to announce he had thought it over the move with his family before making his decision.
