Excitement as UEFA announces third club tournament which starts from 2021

UEFA is planning on to roll out a third club competition across the continent after the Champions League and Europa league. The third European club competition will begin in the 2021/22 season as it has been tipped to be a competition intended to maximise the commercial potential.

UEFA competitions committee executive Andrea Agnelli confirmed that it will be promoted from 2021/22 season. The new competition will join the Champions League and Europa League.

As Agnelli said during the general assembly of the European Clubs Association: “This would bring the overall number of clubs in European competition to 96.” That means all three competitions would have 32 teams playing in them.

“These new regulations will be even more effective than the ones we had in place which delivered astonishing results which have just been announced by UEFA,” said Agnelli.

News of the planned competition was first revealed last month. The number of participants in the Europa League would be reduced from 48 to 32 as part of the reform. The new competition, the precise format of which remains unknown, is also to feature 32 teams.

After final approval from the executive committee UEFA will be working on this tournament to reward domestic success with continental competition and to maximise the organization’s revenue.
