National Assembly will override Buhari on Electoral Act - PDP presidential aspirant boasts

- Taminu Turaki has condemned the rejection of the Electoral Act by President Muhammadu Buhari

- The presidential aspirant assured that the National Assembly will override the president on the matter

- He said it is surprising that President Buhari has failed to sign the Act

A presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Taminu Turaki, on Thursday, September 6, said that the National Assembly would override President Muhammadu Buhari on the just rejected Electoral Act.

Turaki while speaking in Ilorin, Kwara state said, it is surprising that the president has failed to sign the Act. He said the president was only making the matter complicated by not signing the act into law.

"What is happening now is what has been happening with the APC-led Federal Government. Something that ordinarily should be a simple law-making process is being complicated unnecessarily.

“The president has the power upon the passing of a bill to assent to it or refuse to assent to it. But in this particular situation, the FG had gone to court and they lost and after losing, they are now saying they are going to veto it.

“Thank God, the constitution has made provision to override and they are going to use it," Turaki said.

He further urged the federal government and the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration to always place national interest above individual interest.

Speaking on the forthcoming election, Turaki said the APC and Buhari could win the 2019 presidential election if, individual interests of PDP members were not subordinated to the overall national interest.

He noted that the PDP had learnt its lesson and would not do anything to jeopardise its chances of winning next year’s presidential election.
