- Luka Modric beat former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo to the 2018 UEFA prestigious award
- He won the Champions League title and also led his team to win silver medal at the 2018 World Cup
- Meanwhile, the Croatian says the Juventus forward sent him a congratulatory message after the ceremony
Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has revealed that Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo congratulated him after winning the UEFA Player of the Year award.
The Croatian was crowned Europe's best player after beating the Portuguese captain and Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah in the final three shortlisted for the prize.
Both Modric and Ronaldo won the Champions League title at the end of last season but the creative player went ahead to win silver at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Having crowned the winner, Jorge Mendes, Ronaldo's agent blasted the organisers saying his client failure to win the award was “ridiculous and shameful."
Meanwhile, reports filtering the media space after the ceremony claimed that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was disgruntled after missing out on the accolade, despite scoring the most goals in Europe last term.
However, the Portugal and Juventus star was said to have sent a personal message to his former teammate, who led Croatia to the World Cup final this summer.
Speaking after Portugal and Croatia played out a 1-1 friendly draw on Thursday, Modric said Ronaldo told him that he deserved to win the award.
"Cristiano sent me a message, congratulated me and told me he is happy for me and I deserved it," Modric told RTP3 after the game.
"He also said he can't wait to meet me again."
Ronaldo did not play in Thursday's game, as he is rested ahead of a long club season with new side Juventus.
The two stars are set to battle for another award, with Ronaldo, Modric and Salah also nominated for FIFA's The Best Men's Player of the Year.
"I am happy to be in another big award final, we'll see what will happen," Modric said.
"I have a good relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo and we'll have good relationship in the future too.
"Individual awards are important but I am not obsessed with them."
