Nigeria U17 thrash Ivory Coast 5-1 in AFCON 2019 qualifiers in Niger

- Golden Eagles of Nigeria pummeled Ivory Coast 5-1 in their AFCON U17 qualification process

- They bounced back from their 3-2 defeat to Burkina Faso in their first game on Monday, September 3

Nigeria U17 national team revived their hopes of qualifying for the U17 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Tanzania with a convincing 5-1 victory over their counterparts from Ivory Coast.

A goal each from Olakunle Olusegun, Olatomi Olaniyan, Hassan Hussain, Oluwatimilehin Adeniyi and Akinwunmi Amoo handed the Golden Eaglets their first win at the Stade Général Seyni Kountché, Niamey.

Coach Manu Garba's boys got their qualification campaign off to a losing start following their 3-2 defeat to Burkina Faso earlier this week.

The Ivorians put one back in the 68th minute but it was all a consolation as it was unable to help them avoid defeat in the qualifiers.

Nigeria will now await the outcome of the game between Burkina Faso tackle Cote d’Ivoire to know where they will finish on the log.

The country's cadet team were missing at the last U-17 Africa Cup of Nations and by extension at the last U17 World Cup held in India and will be hoping to stage a come back in the 2019 edition to be hosted in Peru.

Next year's AFCON U17 championship is billed to be staged in Tanzania from May 12 to 26, 2019.
