- Lucas Hernandez is reportedly on Real Madrid and Manchester United's radar
- The highly-rated defender helped France's Les Bleus claim the summer World Cup in Russia
- Jose Mourinho is eager to improve his defence line in the coming transfer window
Premier League side Manchester United are plotting a winter move for Atletico Madrid defender Lucas Hernandez.
According to a UK Daily Star report citing France Football, the highly-rated 22-year-old, who has earned 12-cap for France’s Les Bleus this year, has a massive £72m release clause in his new contract after extending his stay until 2024.
The report noted that despite the increase, the Red Devils and Los Blancos are still keeping a close tab on the top defender.
At the last count, Manchester United eggheads have rejected splashing out the cash to bring in the likes of Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld in the summer transfer window.
However, with the Red Devils experiencing a poor campaign, it is looking likely that the board will now back Mourinho to land new additions during the winter window.
At the other end, Hernandez is reportedly not keen to quit the Wanda Metropolitano, but a switch to Man United or the Real Madrid would be difficult to reject.
"Atletico Madrid are the club of my life," he said when penning his new deal in June.
"They've given me everything and I'm very happy with my renewal because it was what I wanted most.
"They've always trusted me, since I came into the youth team and gambled on me, I'm very grateful.
"For me it's an honour to have been part of our academy and have made it to the first team, with the club gambl*ng on me like that.
"I can't do anything else than thank them for their trust and pay them back on the pitch,” Hernandez submitted.
