- Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) president, Ayuba Wabba, said thousands of teachers and health workers have lost their lives to insurgency in the northeast

- He said this during a meeting in Abuja

- Wabba blamed bad and insensitive government on the escalating conflict in the troubled zone

The national president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Ayuba Wabba, has said about 2,000 teachers and health workers have met their untimely death in the crisis-ridden northeast region.

Vanguard reports that Wabba made this remark during during the NLC/American Centre for Interna-tional Labour Solidarity, AFL-CIO, meeting held in Abuja.

He attributed the death of its members to the inability of the government to provide sustainable security for citizens, adding that desperate politicians are manipulating the security of the country for personal interest, thus putting the lives of innocents people on the verge of death.

Stressing the need to recognise the union rights, Wabba said the only way the dream of an effective working union can be realised is if there is a decent working environment and equality in the system.

He said: "We must address issues of human and trade union rights, and importantly issues of governance because it has been proved that conflicts have been on the increase not only in African, but in some other places round the world.

"You can trace the underlying factor to absence or lack of good governance issues of not respecting human and trade union rights and non-adherence to the principle of the rule of law."
