Schmeichel backs Modric for FIFA award ahead of Salah and Ronaldo

- Luka Mordic is tipped to end Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s hold of FIFA Best Men’s Player prize

- The pair of Ronaldo and Modric are on the final three-man shortlist for the award

- Schmeichel believes Modric has the potentials to claim the yearly award

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel is backing Real Madrid and Croatia ace Luka Modric as the player with the potentials to end Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s dominance of the yearly award for FIFA’s Best Men’s Player.

According to a UK Express report citing sources at CNN, the Red Devils legend insists the playmaker, has shown top performances for both club and country that has seen him emerge the best player, at the summer World Cup in Russia and the UEFA Champions League.

On the other hand, Ronaldo, who claimed the FIFA prize in 2016 and 2017 also had the privilege of claiming the Champions League for a fifth time with the Los Blancos last term before heading to Serie A champions Juventus in a reported fee of £105million from Real Madrid in the summer.

Equally, Liverpool’s Egyptian ace Mohamed Salah is among the top star vying to the FIFA award alongside the Croatian superstar and all contenders for the Best Player Award boost of intimidating records with their respective clubs and national teams.

However, despite claiming both the La Liga and Copa De Ray with Barcelona last term, Messi failed to make it to the last three-man standing.

And Schmeichel has now revealed why he believes Modric could cart home the individual silverware for the first time in his career.

I expect so, I think so yes,” Schmeichel was quoted as saying on CNN while responding on a question concerning the chances of Croatian star player.

“The only reason for that is that Luka [Modric] was so incredibly good in every department of how you have to judge a good player.

“First of all his history is incredible.

“The story that he can tell from when he was a young kid and what he has done with his football career, it makes him an interesting guy.

“But what he did in the World Cup, together with the coach and his teammates, in producing this amazing result for Croatia is just incredible.

“He was scoring goals, he was creating goals, he was fighting.

“He was just an incredible player in that period,” Schmeichel submitted.

Meanwhile, previously had reported that Barcelona star Lionel Messi has been excluded from the podium for FIFA's Best award after the final shortlists were leaked.

The Best Men's Player will not be won by the Argentine star this year, despite a magnificent season for the Catalan giants.

Failure to go farther with Argentina at the World Cup or win the Champions League has proved decisive for the selection.
