- There are indications that Yakubu Dogara, the speaker of the House of Representatives, will be getting a stiff opposition in his rerun bid
- This is as a lawmaker in the Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro federal constituency of Bauchi, Gashion Daniel Danna, has declared his interest to contest the seat against him
- Danna said that going by the fact that Dogara has been on the seat for three consecutive tenures, the area should produce another representative
A lawmaker in Bauchi, Gashion Daniel Danna, has declared his interest to contest the House of Representatives seat in the Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro federal constituency of the state in the forthcoming 2019 general polls on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), against Yakubu Dogara, the speaker of the House of Representatives, Vanguard reports.
Speaking with newsmen on Monday, September 3, just after submitting his form at the secretariat of PDP in Bauchi, the 37-year-old lawyer said that Dogara, a native of the area, had been on the seat for three consecutive tenures, adding that on the ground of justice, Tafawa Balewa local government should be allowed to produce another flag bearer in the coming polls.
Danna said: “The youths should be given the opportunity to hold elective positions in 2019 as they constitute over 60 percent of the country’s population. I took this bold decision because of the massive support I got from my constituency.
"For the past two years, I have visited all the wards and nooks and crannies of my constituency to meet with all relevant stakeholders. I am in the race because of the numerous calls from my people, asking me to contest for the seat due to my competence, zeal and ability to deliver.
"I know that I am able to represent them very well. The State PDP Chairman Alhaji Hamza Akuyam, who was represented by state Vice Chairman Alhaji Haruna Musa Shitu, pledged to be fair and just to all aspirants, warning them against defecting to other political parties if they fail to win the primary election."
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that there were voiced opinions by political critics as to what influenced the victory of the PDP in the Bogoro local government area of Bauchi during the recent Senate by-election in the state's south senatorial district.
Although the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the polls in every other local government area in the constituency, the trend was broken in Bogoro, the federal constituency that Dogara had represented since 2007, with the PDP winning nearly twice as much votes as the APC in the local council.
