The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday, August 30, adopted the direct primary method for the selection of its presidential candidate, while states would be allowed to choose which of the methods best suits their peculiarities.

The Punch reports that the party, however, said that states willing to use the direct primary method should write officially to the national secretariat.

Legit.ng gathered that this was part of the resolutions reached by the party’s second highest decision-making body after its NEC meeting in Abuja on Thursday, August 30.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that six governors of the All Progressives Congress have reportedly rejected the adoption of the direct primary option to elect candidates of the APC at all levels ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The Punch reported that a chieftain of the party disclosed that the six governors met with Adams Oshiomhole, chairman of the APC, on Wednesday, August 29, over the proposal.

It was also reported that two of the governors who met Oshiomhole are from the north central, one from the north west, and one each from the south east, south west and north east.

The news outlet quoted the chieftain as saying: “They told Oshiomhole that they were opposed to direct primary election. All of them, except the governor from the northeast, said they have problems with their people and that there is a possibility that they and their candidates may not get the party’s ticket if they should embrace the direct primary election."
