- Mourinho is reportedly in support of Manchester United's offer to Martial
- The Old Trafford chiefs have offered the 22-year-old a new five-year deal
- The Portuguese manager and the Frenchman have had their differences
According to reports, Jose Mourinho has backed Manchester United's desire to give Anthony Martial a new five-year deal, as talks between the club and his agent Philippe Lamboley have begun.
The Frenchman became football's most expensive teenager when he signed for United from Monaco in a deal worth an initial £36million, with more than £21million in bonus clauses in 2015.
One of those add-ons was triggered when he scored his 25th goal for the Red Devils, something he achieved by the end of his second season at the club.
However after scoring 17 goals in 49 appearances in his first season in the Premier League, Martial has only scored 19 in 87 over the last two years.
Martial's relationship with Mourinho has also been prickly, with the manager dropping several hints about his chances-to-goals ratio and work-rate.
As a result, the 22-year-old has been in and out of United's starting line-up and his lack of games last season certainly cost him a place in France's World Cup-winning squad in Russia.
His situation with Mourinho at United alerted other clubs for a possible move with offering coming in and out England.
Despite not being included in United's squad that lost to Spurs, it now appears that Old Trafford's bosses are not willing to give up on a player who was named Europe's most promising young talent by UEFA just three years ago.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Manchester United has offered Anthony Martial a new five-year contract at Old Trafford in a slap in the face for Jose Mourinho.
The Red Devils are keen to tie the down the Frenchman with the new long-term deal, despite Mourinho’s determination to get rid of the striker this summer.
