- Man United and Manchester City tussle for Ruben Neves
- The Portuguese ace has had a bright start to life at Wolves
- The 21-year-old scored a fantastic free-kick against Everton
The two Manchester clubs are set to go head-to-head for Wolves star Ruben Neves, according to reports.
SunSport exclusively revealed earlier this month Pep Guardiola was keen on the Portuguese ace who has been a huge hit at the Molineux since his arrival from Porto a year ago.
And the 21-year-old has continued his fine form in the Premier League with a stunning free kick in the opening day draw with Everton.
According to Goal, Jose Mourinho has been alerted to Guardiola’s interest in his fellow countryman and could be preparing a rival bid.
The Citizens fear they could lose out again in their search for midfielder after missing out on Jorginho who joined Chelsea and allowing their second-choice Fred move to United.
Guardiola is after a long-term replacement for Fernandinho who is 33-year-old and tried to lure Neves to the Etihad at the end of last month’s transfer window.
But the newly-promoted Premier League side and his agent Jorge Mendes refused to do business promising the Molineux faithful the playmaker will not be sold this summer.
City's sporting director, Txiki Begiristain, met with Mendes during Wolves' draw with Everton and was also in attendance when Guardiola's side were forced to a 1-1 scoreline at Molineux on Saturday.
Both Begiristain and Mendes have worked closely on deals for Nicolas Otamendi, Bernardo Silva and Ederson in recent years.
City may try again in the January window but Wolves are looking for at least £60million for the Portugual international.
Mourinho is also Mendes' client and City's chiefs fear their close relationship could put the Red Devils in the driving seat for Neves’ signature, despite his preference to move to the Etihad.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng ha earlier reported that Manchester United has offered Anthony Martial a new five-year contract at Old Trafford in a slap in the face for Jose Mourinho.
The Red Devils are keen to tie the down the Frenchman with the new long-term deal, despite Mourinho’s determination to get rid of the striker this summer.
