National Assembly committee meets on INEC’s budget

- The National Assembly joint committee on the INEC will be meeting today, on Monday, August 27, to consider the commission’s budget for 2019 general elections

- The meeting will center on the two budget proposals submitted by President Buhari and the INEC according to the committee chairman

- Senator Suleiman Nazif who is the committee chairman also noted that necessary work on the budget is in advanced stage

Emerging reports have it that the National Assembly joint committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would be meetting today, Monday, August 27, to consider two budget proposals budget for 2019 general elections.

The Nation reports that the committee made this known in a statement through its chairman, Senator Suleiman Nazif. gathered that the budget proposals include the N143 billion that President Buhari requested for in a letter sent to the National Assembly and the N189 billion that INEC also asked for.

The statement read: “Sequel to the ongoing consideration of the Independent National Electoral Commission, 2019 general election budget by the joint committees of the Senate and House of Representatives, the public is hereby informed that work on the budget is in advanced stage and in line with the mandate issued to the joint committee by the leadership of the National Assembly.

“Equally, the joint committee deliberated on all key attributes of the budget while taking into cognisance the imperative urgency for the budget to be ready in time for the 2019 general election, hence necessitating sacrifice and selflessness from our distinguished and honourable members.

“Furthermore, it is imperative to state here explicitly that after audacious sessions with critical stakeholders, the joint committee dissolved into executive structure and agreed to resume on August 27 (today) to consider the harmonised version of the budget report diligently.

“More so the report of the joint committee will be made available for further and appropriate legislative action in earnest.”

Meanwhile, had reported that President Buhari informed the National Assembly that the 2019 elections will cost N242.4 billion.

President Buhari disclosed this in a letter to the Senate which was read on the floor during plenary session.

The president in the letter explained that implementing a budget of N9.12 trillion for 2018 will be extremely challenging and therefore does not consider it expedient to increase the 2018 budget to accommodate the funds needed for the 2019 General Elections.
