The flag-off of the N22.699 billion reconstruction of the Mayo-Belwa-Jada-Ganye-Toungo road in Adamawa has elicited positive reactions from residents of the area.

The residents made their feeling known at the ceremony marking the flag-off of the project on Saturday, August 25, Daily Trust reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the area is also home to former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, who is also an aspirant for the presidency in the forthcoming 2019 elections.

The rehabilitation of the road had been started two decades ago by the defunct Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF), under the leadership of Muhammadu Buhari.

Since that time, the road did not receive any attention; even during the eight year administration of Olusegun Obasanjo and Atiku Abubakar.

One resident, a certain Gambo Tardo, said the issue could affect the outcome of 2019 election; not only in Toungo, Jada, Ganye and Mayo-Belwa, but also in some communities in Taraba state.

Another resident reportedly stated: “Our kinsman should have influenced this project when he was in government; he could have taken the credit.”

The minister of state for power, works and housing, Mustafa Shehuri, who was present at the ceremony, stated that the 112 kilometres road project was in fulfillment of the campaign promises made by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the people of the area.

He said: “The 112 kilometre road which terminates at Toungo serves as a vital link between Taraba state and the Republic of Cameroon, as well as, to the Mambilla Hydro Power Plant, the Gashaka-Gumti National park and several agricultural communities.

“Consequently, due to the strategic nature of the important towns and cities it cuts across, the road attracts high vehicular traffic, all year round.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Alhaji Abdullahi Sugar, an associate of Atiku Abubakar, said the former vice president will send President Muhammadu Buhari back to Daura, come February 2019.

Sugar said Atiku’s nationwide appeal would enable him defeat Buhari; not minding the incumbency factor.

He said if the former vice president gets the PDP ticket, he would send Buhari out of the Presidential Villa through popular votes.
