- FA Cup champions maintained their 100% win record to the start of the EPL season
- Maurizio Sarri's men beat Newcastle 2-1 in their match day 3 encounter at the St James' Park
- His side also set a new pass record after completing over 900 passes in the game
Chelsea continued their impressive to the 2018-19 Premier League season on Saturday after beating Newcastle United 2-1 at the Saint James' Park.
The victory makes it three wins out of three games as they currently rank second on the log behind Liverpool but with same points.
However, Maurizio Sarri's men set a club record number of passes in a single EPL game that saw the Blues racked up 82% of ball possession.
The Stamford Bridge outfit were on the verge of dropping point until DeAndre Yedlin's own goal handed the visitors all three points.
Eden Hazard gave his side the lead in the 76th minute but Joselu's strike cancelled the Belgian's goal with less than seven minutes to the end of the game.
Chelsea players are still adapting to their new manager's style, but Sarri's influence can already be seen in their constant movement of the ball.
Former Napoli star Jorginho was instrumental for his side's win as he made 173 passes (158 successful). Had he made one more, he would have equalled the Premier League record, which Ilkay Gundogan set in March.
The Blues made 913 passes against Rafael Benitez's team, with 838 reaching their target, while the hosts made just 200 passes and completed 182.
Under Antonio Conte last season, the most they attempted in one game was 832, against Huddersfield.
Meanwhile, Chelsea's tally is a new high for the club since Opta began recording in 2003-04, but it is not a new best for the Premier League.
EPL champions Manchester City are the English topflight's pass masters and have been breaking their own records since 2017.
Pep Guardiola's team's 1015 passes against Swansea in April this year is top of the chart, which overtook the record of 976 they had set and then leveled in March against Chelsea and Everton.
The fourth best on record is again City - 929 against West Brom in October 2017, which beat the 2011 tally set against Stoke in 2011 under Roberto Mancini.
