Kashamu plotting to join APC - Ogun PDP group alleges

- A PDP pressure group in Ogun state accused Senator Kashamu of plotting to defect to the APC

- The group alleged that Kashamu wants to join the APC to prevent his extradition to the US by the federal government

- It warned the APC not to accept Kashamu as such action will portray both the APC and the federal government in very bad light

The rift in Ogun state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a new dimension at the weekend, as a pressure group within the party accused Senator Buruji Kashamu representing Ogun East senatorial district in the Senate of making secret moves to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The group, Ogun Youth Consultative Vanguard, alleged in a statement it issued in Lagos that following Kashamu’s controversial expulsion from the PDP, the senator had been hob-knobbing with chieftains of the APC in Abuja, with a view to defecting to the latter, This Day reports.

In the statement signed by its chairman, Ezekiel Adeshina, and secretary, Johnson Adetoun, the group described the alleged defection plot as a scheme by the senator to hide under the protection of the ruling party against threats to have him extradited to the United States to answer to charges on drug-related offences.

“Lately, capitalising on his recent expulsion from the PDP and the recent gale of defection that led to many senators and House of Representatives members defecting from the APC to the main opposition PDP, Kashamu has intensified moves to defect to the APC.

“In achieving this desperate objective, he has already secured the assistance of a governorship aspirant of the ruling APC in Ogun state, who is also his very close ally, to help him reach out to the powers-that-be in the presidency in Abuja to apprise them of his desire to move over to the ruling party and convince them to facilitate his defection,” the statement said.

Legit.ng gathered that the group noted that the purported move through the governorship aspirant was aimed at convincing the ruling party that Kashamu had a large following in the state and as such, would be a worthwhile catch.

The group also accused Kashamu of colluding with some APC members in the state on August 2, 2018, to stage a protest against his expulsion.

Furthermore, the group, which expressed solidarity with the state chairman of the PDP, Sikirullahi Ogundele, argued that the August 2 rally by Kashamu “was purely an APC affair.”

It also accused the senator of series of anti-party activities, especially with regard to the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti state, where he allegedly worked for APC.

“We also want to remind the federal government that accepting or facilitating Kashamu’s defection into the fold of the ruling party to give him refuge would portray both the APC and the federal government in a very bad light as mere hypocrites paying lip service to fighting corruption,” the group added.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) dared the Senate President Bukola Saraki to reconvene the Senate if he was not losing sleep over the possibility of his impeachment as claimed.

The spokesperson for the ruling party, Yekini Nabena, responding to a recent statement by the Senate president said Saraki would leave the seat of the Senate President for a loyal member.

Nabena said all legal process must be followed to impeach the Senate president.
