Real Madrid recorded a comprehensive 4-1 win away to Girona in their second La Liga game played at the Montilivi Stadium.
Madrid knew it was going to be a difficult contest against the Catalan club because they lost by 2-1 in a similar fixture last season.
Girona contained Real from their back-four as they did everything possible to contain the pockets of space in the match.
Karim Benzema was first to score but the referee's assistant was late to raise an offside flag, the goal however did not stand.
Girona also threatened with Portu in the early exchanges as Lopetegui's side were kept on their toes with the blistering pace and skill of the winger.
However it did not take long for Girona to score as Anthony Lozano shot was initially blocked by Sergio Ramos before Borja Garcia teased Casemiro and Navas before putting the ball in the roof of the net. It was 1-0 after 17 minutes played.
The home side put more pressure on Los Blancos as they team from the Spanish capital were forced to defend desperately moments after the goal.
But gradually, the European champions got back into game as captain Ramos was gifted two clear cut headers that went just wide.
Then in the 37th minute, Madrid equalized through their controversial captain as Marco Asensio was fouled in the box by Muniesa after Isco pulled a fine save from a Marcelo's cross on the left.
Ramos tucked it away with a calm finish to equal the scoreline at 1-1 and that was how it stood before both sides went into the break.
After the restart, the Galaticos were ones asking the questions as Gareth Bale pulled an acrobatic save from Bono in the 50th minute.
A minute later, Asensio again was fouled in the box by Pedro Poro as Girona's inexperience began to take a tool on them.
This time, it was Benzema who stepped up to convert the resulting spot-kick to make the score 2-1 to Real.
Seven minutes later, Girona were caught sleeping as Madrid made a swift counter-attacking move through Isco who found Bale on the right and the Welshman applied a superb left-foot finish to make it 3-1.
In the 79th minute, Benzema completed his brace and put the result beyond doubt as Bale's low cross went straight into the path of the Frenchman and he controlled and put the ball into the back of the net to make it 4-1.
Real Madrid held on to continue their impressive start of teh new campaign as the match ended 4-1 in their favour.
