I am leaving APC for good - Osun lawmaker joins PDP days to election

Just about 31 days to the governorship election is in Osun, a member of the state House of Assembly representing Ila constituency, Clement Akanni, has dumped the All Progressives Congress and joined the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

Legit.ng’s Sola Adetona reports that Akanni said he decided to join the PDP because of the failure of the APC’s government in the state to fulfill its promises to his constituency.

Adetona said the lawmaker spoke at the palace of the Orangun of Ila Orangun, adding that he was forced out of the ruling party by those who lacked an understanding of his political ideology.

“Our college of education used to have 33,000 students, it now has less than 2,000. APC promised to upgrade our institution to university. Rather than do that, the current government through its policies is gradually killing the institution.

“When the government wanted to downsize the workforce in the state-owned higher institutions, 73 names were selected from the Eollege of Education, Ila, while 38 names were pencilled down for retrenchment from Ilesha College of Education.

“I vehemently resisted this. I told my colleagues in the House of Assembly that Ilesha college has more staffers than lla, yet has lesser number of staffers that would be retrenched.

“Whenever I tried to positively influence government policies to favour my constituents, some people in APC would say no,” he said.

“During the seven years I spent at the House of Assembly under APC, I was the best in terms of projects executed, yet most maligned by the party.

“I have been enduring, but it has got to a point where I think the change I was expecting from them could no longer come.

“I realised it was time to pitch my tent with a different party that has a philosophy similar to mine - a philosophy of talking less and doing more,” he added.

The Ejemu of Ila, Chief Paul Ogunrinade, who addressed those in attendance, begged the governorship candidate of the PDP, Ademola Adeleke, to upgrade college of education to a university when he is eventually elected the governor of the state.

He also demanded that all roads that link Ila to Ekiti and Kwara states should be rehabilitated.

Speaking at the event, Adeleke said he had fulfilled all promises he made before being elected a senator during July 8, by-election to fill the vacant seat of Osun West senatorial district.

Legit.ng earlier reported that human rights activist and lawyer, Femi Falana, while reacting to the recent defection of lawmakers from All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said the defection is illegal.

Falana, who made this statement during a Channels TV programme on Friday, August 3, said the lawmakers’ defection is contrary to both the provisions of the 1999 constitution as well as previous court judgements regarding the issue.
