Coalition against Wike, upland dominance thickens ahead of 2019 general elections

- The riverine coalition against upland dominance of Rivers state governorship position has thickened

The campaign by indigenes of Rivers state from the riverine area to end nearly 20 years dominance of the state governorship position by indigenes from the upland area has thickened.

Vanguard reports that a joint declaration was signed in Port Harcourt by no fewer than 50 Rivers non-governmental organisation and coastal ethnic groups under the umbrella of Rivers Conscience. gathers that Rivers Conscience declared that upland hegemony has reached a breaking point and insisted that a governor from the riverine area must lead in 2019, which means that Governor Nyesom Wike and other upland aspirants should not contest.

The campaign was joined by Rivers Women Alliance on Wednesday, August 22, which expressed dissatisfaction over the dominance of governorship position by people from the upland.

The coordinator of Rivers Conscience, Dason Nemieboka, stated that upland/riverine power rotation had been enshrined in Rivers politics since the 1958 Willinks Commission Report and had been so respected till the governorship of Chibuike Amaechi.

Nemieboka said: “It is worrisome to all men of conscience and decency that after almost 20 years of civil rule, from 1999 to date, no riverine man or woman has been elected into the highest office of governor of Rivers State.”

Meanwhile, previously reported that Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, minister of transportation, stated that Governor Nyesom Wike had failed in governing the people of Rivers state.

He made the assertion at a rally in Bera, headquarters of Gokana local government area of the state, where he received hundreds of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) supporters into the All Progressives Congress (APC).
