Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has withdrawn his name from the Nigerian squad that will play Seychelles in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against next month.
The 33-year-old who skippered the side to Russia 2018 World Cup will not travel to the island nation from his base in China.
The former Chelsea midfielder only recently returned from injury for his Chinese Super League side Tianjin TEDA .
According to KweséESPN Gernot Rohr confirmed Mikel had called him to withdraw his name: "We spoke together. He is just coming back from injury and he needs to push his club commitments to get back in shape.
"After injury he needs time to get fit again."
The German tactician is set to name his squad for the on Friday, September 8, as the Super Eagles will be looking to keep their qualification hopes alive for the 2019 AFCON in Cameroon.
The Super Eagles lost their first game to South Africa last June by 2-0 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
And a win for Rohr's men against Seychelles will bring back their hopes of making it through to the competition in the group that also have Libya.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Super Eagles winger Victor Moses has announced his retirement from the Nigerian national team.
