Nigerian man becomes Google’s 1st machine learning expert in Sub-Saharan Africa (photos)

Robert John, a Nigerian based in Kaduna, has become the first certified Google developer expert in machine learning in Sub-Saharan Africa. The talented man was certified on Monday, August 13.

John was nominated by Google's programme manager, Aniedi Udo-Obong. The programme manager confirmed that John was indeed the first in Sub-Saharan Africa.

According to Google, John achieved his certification due to the contribution he makes in his field. “Undergoing a stringent evaluation process, as well as being nominated by a Google employee or partner, authorised by the Google Developers team, and all based on the special contribution they make to their field."

John took to Twitter to thank Udo-Onong for referring him for the certificate. He said: "I would like to say a very big thank you to @aniediudo who referred me for a #MachineLearning #GoogleDeveloperExpert without having met me. Glad to say as of this moment I am ML GDE! It's time to put in more work and build the ecosystem."

The talented developer is an expert in machine learning, an appilication of articial intelligence that teaches machines to learn and operate by themselves without explicit instructions.

It was gathered that the certification is a validation of recognised expertise in the technology field.

John who is also a Chief Technical Officer at a technology company in Kaduna told Techpoint that he had a 4-week stringent checks and interviews about his work with Google for verification.

He said: “After stringent checks and interviews, they mostly wanted to know about my work in deepening the proliferation of machine learning in the continent, community building and ecosystem education.”
