The Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association (ATSSSAN) has threatened to frustrate the take-off of the new Nigeria's national carrier, Nigeria Air, over an unsettled outstanding of N45 billion severance pay.
The aviation workers said the money was being owed to the ex-workers of the defunct carrier - the Nigeria Airways.
A joint statement by the national president and the secretary of ATSSSAN, Ahmadu Ilitrus, and Frances Akinjole, said the federal government has failed to settle the outstanding entitlements of ex-workers of Nigeria Airways about 15 years after the airline was liquidated.
Sun reports that the union alleged that about 960 ex-workers of Nigeria Airways have already died “in very avoidable health conditions.
The union also that the ex-workers died while waiting for their entitlements, with the families they left behind abandoned by the government.
“ATSSSAN warns that if the government does not pay Nigeria Airways ex-workers their hard earned entitlements, it cannot guarantee any place for the new airline in the industry.
“We have resolved that the issue of payment of the severance benefits of ex-Nigeria Airways workers must be resolved immediately to forestall brewing labour issues that could affect negatively the prospects of the recently unveiled Nigeria Air by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
“To this end, we have resolved that if the management of Bi-Courtney does not recall the terminated staff and allow unfettered unionisation of willing staff of the company within two weeks from the date of the publication of this communiqué, ATSSSAN shall embark on a series disruption of operations at MMA2 until the management of BASL complies with its demands,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the federal government had said it would provide $55 million upfront grant in order to ensure the take-off of the new national carrier, Nigeria Air, this year.
The federal government providing a breakdown of how the new national carrier would be funded also stated that it was not paying $300 million for 5% stake in the airline.
FG also said that $300 million was the entire cash flow funding requirement of the carrier for a three-year period.
