Former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu has warned Arsenal to tap into Mesut Ozil's strengths and stop rubbing his weaknesses on his face.

The Germany international has suffered heavy criticism in recent time over his poor performances for both his country and club.

An issue that forced him to announce his retirement from international football after their failure to defend the World Cup title they won four years back in Russia.

The ex-Nigeria international was a cult hero during his time with the Gunners for his unpredictable skill but not exactly famed for scoring many goals.

Kanu, 42, said: "Every player is different. What you need is his strengths, not his weaknesses. He can work on his weaknesses but you can’t change him.

"Either you accept him or you let him go. You don’t want Maradona or Messi to go back and defend, you want them to go and do what they know how to do.

"If it’s a style of play, the coach has to accommodate that and make room for Mesut to play in that manner. I don’t know why people are still complaining a lot about him.

Kanu is a fan of Ozil’s talents but he said: "The only thing I can say is that sometimes he’s not into it. But you can never change him."

Meanwhile his international compatriot Toni Kroos labelled Ozil's racism allegations as "nonsense."

Arsenal star Ozil quit Germany duty after their World Cup horror show and claimed he had faced "racism and disrespect" because of his Turkish roots.

Speaking to Bild, Kroos hit back: "The manner of his retirement was not okay.

"The proportion that is properly addressed in his statement is unfortunately overshadowed by the much higher proportion of nonsense.

"I think that he knows that racism does not exist within the national team and the German FA. On the contrary, we are always committed to diversity and integration.

"Mesut was criticised for the photo - and rightly so. And he missed the chance to explain himself. Nevertheless, he was absolutely supported by the leadership and the team.

"Later he was - as others were - criticised for the performance at the World Cup. The type of criticism was certainly not always at a good level - but then you have to go through as a player." previously reported that Real Madrid star Toni Kroos has blasted Arsenal attacker Mesut Ozil by dismissing his racism allegations as nonsense.

After the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Arsenal star Mesut Ozil announced his retirement from international football, claiming he has faced racism because of his Turkish roots.

Mesut Ozil also met controversial Turkey president Recep Erdogan before the 2018 World Cup which was won by France.
