Breaking: 18 trapped as building reportedly collapses in Abuja

One person has been reported dead while about 18 others are feared trapped after a building collapsed in Abuja on Friday, August 17.

The Punch reports that the four-storey building was under construction when it collapsed on the workers and food sellers in the Jabi area of the city.

Sahara reporters stated that eight people have been rescued, including the site engineer, who had his two legs broken.

The online medium said the building had been abandoned for 15 years before contractors were recently mobilised to the site.

Officials of the federal capital territory development authority, the FCT fire service and National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA), have reportedly commenced rescue operation at the site to free the trapped victims.

A tweeter user with the user name, Chukydyk, claimed the incident occurred opposite Panda Supermarket in Abuja.

Meanwhile, in another report, the sum of $11 million has been donated by United States Agency for International Development (USAID), towards the commencement of the 2018 Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS).

Legit.ng gathered that Isaac Adewole, the minister of health, at a joint press conference in Abuja on Thursday, August 16, said the survey will be conducted by his ministry and the National Population Commission from August 15 to December 15.

The minister who was represented by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Abdullziz Abdullahi, at the press conference said the survey will be held in the 36 states of the federation and the FCT.

The survey is a five-year periodic worldwide survey programme designed by USAID with support from international donor organisations to assist countries in households sample surveys to monitor changes in population, health and nutrition.
