Just in: INEC completes registration of 23 new political parties, issues certificates

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Thursday, August 16, completed the registration process of 23 new political parties in Nigeria. The electoral umpire also presented certificates to the newly registered parties.

The political parties were registered ahead of the 2019 general election.

Premium Times reports that with the issuance of certificates to the 23 parties, the number of such political associations currently in the country has risen to 91.

Confirming the development on its Twitter handle also, INEC said the certificates were presented to the parties by its chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, in Abuja.

“Presentation of certificates to 23 newly registered political parties at the commission’s conference hall by the chairman INEC Mahmood Yakubu,” the tweet read. earlier reported that in preparation for the forthcoming 2019 general election, scores of parties are said to be battle ready to oust the present ruling party out of power.

The report quoted Nigerian Tribune as saying that a coalition of 36 political parties on Wednesday, July 4, 2018, said that it had set up a steering committee saddled with the responsibility of coming out with a blueprint on the solutions to the nation’s problems.
