Messi and other La Liga stars set for league matches in the US

- La Liga matches are scheduled to hold in United States

- The aim is to promote Spanish football in North America

- However, an El Clasico will not be played outside Spain

A La Liga game is set to hold in the United States, possibly as early as this year, but possibly not a Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Officials of the Spanish league announced on Thursday it is planning to play a match across the Atlantic as part of a new 15-year to promote football in North America.

The group are the organizers of the world's largest summer club tournament, the International Champions Cup.

Two of Spain's biggest clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid played against each other in the tournament in Miami last year.

La Liga president Javier Tebas, however, dismissed the possibility of taking the 'Clasico' showdown away from Spain.

The Spanish league have been hoping to grow and keep pace with the powerful Premier League and have been trying to expand internationally for some time.

Tebas last year also talked about the league possibly playing a regular-season match in China, just like the Spanish Super Cup was held in Tangier, Morocco.

It marked the first time it was played outside Spain and playing the league in the United States would be the first to be played outside of Europe.

"Joining with Relevent to create LaLiga North America is a major milestone in our international expansion strategy," Oscar Mayo, the league's international development director, said in a statement.

"This agreement ensures not only a bright future for soccer in North America, but also for LaLiga and our clubs."

Ten years ago, the Premier League tried to introduce an extra international match but plans for each team to play a 39th game abroad were abandoned amid opposition from FIFA and fan groups.

Meanwhile, had earlier reported that Spanish champions Barcelona on Wednesday night, August 15, defeated Boca Juniors 3-0 in their final pre-season game as they won the Joan Gamper Trophy.

This will be the sixth successive time that the Catalan giants will win the trophy ahead of the start of their campaign in the 2018/19 Spanish La Liga season.
