Spain and Manchester City superstar David Silva has announced his retirement from international football.
The 32-year-old made his intentions known through an emotional letter he posted on social media earlier today
Silva found the back of the net 35 times in his 125 appearances for the 2010 FIFA World Cup champions.
His announcement came shortly after Barcelona defender Gerard Pique hanged his international boots to focus on club football for the rest of his career.
He won the FIFA World Cup with Spain in 2010, and also clinched two UEFA European Championship titles in 2008, 2012.
In his letter, Silva, who has largely been considered my many plaudits as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation, said he was “proud to have represented La Roja for more than a decade.”
"I lived and dreamed with a team that will forever be remembered," his statement read in part.
Silva's last competitive encounter for his country ended up in disappointment as they lost on penalties to Russia last month.
Prior to his retirement, Silva played earned 125 caps in a Spain shirt, scoring 35 goals in the process.
He joins the likes of former Barcelona star Andreas Iniesta and defender Gerard Pique who also recently announced their retirement from international duty.

Mateo was born in December, a few months before his due date – reasons he was kept at the hospital until yesterday when he was discharged.
Meanwhile, the Spain international has described the period as the ‘long five months’, as he had to shuttle between the team and the hospital to be there for his family.
