An umbrella group of professional, political and town unions in Anambra state, the Anambra Progressive Union, has vowed to begin mobilizing traditional rulers, religious leaders, student unions and related bodies in the south east to help highlight what it referred to as discrimination against Chief Olisa Metuh.

The group made the development public in a statement signed by its coordinator, Amaechi Onowu, its secretary, Obinna Okafor, and others.

In the statement sent to Legit.ng, the group claimed that Metuh, the former national publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had been denied permission to proceed abroad to attend to his health issues.

It lamented over the fact that Metuh had been continually denied the opportunity to attend to his health, despite the fact that individuals accused of greater misdemeanors had been granted such privileges.

The statement read: "Following our further investigations into Chief Olisa Metuh’s health and our executive meeting; we resolved to notify the public as follows:

"Chief Olisa Metuh's medical crisis started in 2008 following a fall. He was diagnosed of spinal stenosis and was recommended for a laminectomy at National Hospital, Abuja. Out of fear, he did not have the surgery then. He further traveled to Dubai and was advised to do hot water therapy by the doctors as palliative.

"Following his incarceration by EFCC at Kuje prisons in 2016 and his fall from his office chair, his health deteriorated. His medical team in National Hospital, Abuja, advised for a definite surgery. The team, however, recommended it should be in a hospital with spinal cord monitoring devices.

"With the continuous opposition to grant Chief Olisa Metuh leave to travel abroad for surgery, coupled with his deteriorating health which could lead to paralyses if not operated on; he agreed to fly his doctors from London, for him to be operated on, here in Nigeria. Unfortunately, the unavailability of the spinal cord monitoring device stalled the surgery.

"It is important to note that while Chief Olisa Metuh is asking for leave to travel for medical treatment, former governor of Adamawa state, Vice Admiral Murtala Nyako (rtd) facing trial for N29 billion, has been granted leave twice to travel to Saudi Arabia for Hajj.

"And just recently, former chief of defence staff, Air Chief Alex Badeh (rtd), facing trial for N3.9 billion was granted leave to travel to UK, to visit friends and family members.

"Chief Olisa Metuh had already provided medical reports from three (3) different government hospitals, including MRI, X-Rays and CT-scan; still, his medical treatment is been opposed.

"Chief Metuh has already provided two sureties (former minister of aviation, Chief Osita Chidoka and the deputy Senate president, Sen Ike Ekweremadu), who are willing; including his lawyers, to provide any further condition necessary to allow Chief Olisa Metuh to go for medical treatment."

The group continued: "After careful considerations of the facts of Chief Olisa Metuh health, we have resolved as follows:

"That it is obvious some people want the most vocal and active politician from Anambra state (and arguably in the southeast) since 1999, deactivated and silenced.

"That operatives of EFCC and the federal government should as a matter of urgency, subject Chief Olisa Metuh to an independent medical examination in any place of their choice to ascertain the true facts of his health, and if in concurrence with his provided medical reports, he should be allowed to travel abroad for medical treatment.

"That APU would commence engagements with south-east traditional rulers, religious leaders, town union president generals, student and market leaders on the bias and unfair trial of Chief Olisa Metuh."
