Tottenhma kick-started their campaign at Saint James' Park against Newcastle with a narrow 2-1 win.

Jan Vertonghen set the ball rolling with a header after just eight minutes of the match courtesy of a Davidson Sanchez's headed assist but the goal was confirmed with the goal-line technology.

The Magpies responded three minutes later after a beautiful cross from Matt Ritchie which found Spanish striker Joselu who made it 1-1.

And in the 18th minute, England international Dele Alli headed home a great cross from Serge Aurier to score the winner as it ended 2-1 to Spurs.

At Vicarage Stadium, Roberto Pereyra scored a brace to give Watford a 2-0 victory over visiting Brighton.

The Argentine put the Hornets ahead with a superb volley in the first half while a solo move in the 54th minute completed his brace giving his side maximum points.

Newly-promoted Fulham were beaten 2-0 by fellow London neighbours Crystal Palace at the Craven Cottage.

Jeffery Schlupp scored the first after making a strong run into the box to finish into the roof of the net and Wilfred Zaha made it 2-0 for Roy Hodgson's side.

Ryan Fraser got the only goal as Bournemouth ran away with a 1-0 victory over Cardiff City. Callum Wilson made a darting run on the right and provided the assist for Fraser to score.

Wilson had the chance to double the advantage as he missed a penalty after parried the ball inot the corner. It ended 1-0 to Bournemouth but he made amends with a clean finish in the 90th minute.
