Over 1,000 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oron federal constituency of Akwa Ibom state defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday, August 9, despite the defection of Senator Godswill Akpabio to the ruling party on Wednesday, August 8.
According to The Nation, the defectors were received by the state PDP chairman, Obong Paul Ekpo, who urged the people of the state to keep supporting the party and the state governor, Udom Emmanuel.
Legit.ng gathers that Ekpo said the PDP has remained a religion for the people of the state and by extension, Nigerians, despite the defections of some key members, to the APC.
He said: “Akwa Ibom state, over the years, matched promises with action, as demonstrated in the developmental strides of the Udom Emmanuel administration.
“So, I call on Oron nation to deliver one hundred percent vote to Governor Udom and the PDP in the 2019 election.”
Ekpo thanked the defectors for realising their mistake and coming back to the PDP; adding that the party is the place where people can seek elective office without rancor.
Some of those who defected back to the PDP include a former member of the House of Assembly, Remigius Asukwo, Sunday Ating, Asuquo Awana and Victor Anwankak.
Recall that Legit.ng previously reported that the former minority leader of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressives Congress.
Akpabio officially defected to the ruling party at the Ikot-Ekpene township stadium in Akwa Ibom.
Some of those present at the defection ceremony were the national chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole; Senate majority leader, Ahmed Lawan; national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; and Nigeria's minister of information and culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.
