Dino Melaye shuns court again over gunrunning charges

Senator Dino Melaye again shunned a Lokoja high court on Thursday, August 9, which summoned him to answer charges bordering on gunrunning levied against him and two others.

While Melaye stayed away, the two suspects charged alongside him - Kabir Seidu, aka Osama; and Nuhu Salihu aka Smally, were in court, The Punch reports.

The trial magistrate, Sulyman Abdalah, had, at the last hearing, fixed Thursday, August 9, to commence trial following the complaints from Melaye that he was attacked on his way to Lokoja to honour an invitation from the police.

When the case was called his lawyer, Barrister Yemi Mohammed, who stood in for Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), told the court that his client could not be present in court on health grounds.

Mohammed presented a medical report to that effect, a move that was not opposed to by the legal representative of the Kogi state police command, Theophilus Oteme.

The two alleged accomplices, however, applied for bail, saying they have been suffering for a crime they knew nothing about.

Consequently, Abdalah adjourned the case till Thursday, August 21 for the bail applications of the two alleged accomplices and adjourned to Thursday, September 20 for hearing in the case of Senator Melaye.

Melaye, senator representing Kogi west senatorial district in the National Assembly, has been having a running battle with the police in the last few weeks.

The police had on Wednesday, March 28, declared Dino Melaye wanted. The lawmaker was declared wanted alongside Mohammed Audu, son of a former governor of Kogi state, Abubakar Audu.

The police had said the duo have also been placed on Interpol watchlist for allegedly providing false information to the police in relation to an allegation of attempted murder on Melaye’s life sometime last year.
