Family affair: Two brothers in APC, PDP battle for vacant Katsina senatorial seat

- Residents in the Katsina North senatorial district of Katsina state will be trooping out to vote a new senator on Saturday, August 11

- Interestingly, the battle of the seat is between two brothers from a popular family in the area

- The duo are contesting under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) respectively

Two brothers, Kabir Babba Kaita of the PDP and his younger brother, Ahmad Babba Kaita of the APC, are the two major contenders who will slug it on Saturday, August 11, during a by-election to fill the vacant seat of the Katsina North senatorial zone at the National Assembly.

The seat became vacant following the death of Senator Mustapha Bukar, an APC lawmaker last April.

The elder Kaita, a retired Customs officer, had emerged the PDP candidate by consensus as his only opponent, Mani Nasarawa, withdrew from the race before the primary polls.

Ahmad Babba Kaita, a serving member of the House of Representatives, received a majority of 1,723 votes to beat 10 other aspirants during his party’s primary elections to select a candidate.

According to the Katsina state Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Jibrin Ibrahim Zarewa, four other political parties are expected to contest the seat, alongside the APC and the PDP.

The election will hold across the 12 local government areas of Daura, Zango, Baure, Sandamu, Mai’adua, Mashi, Ingawa, Mani, Dutsi, Kusada, Bindawa and Kakia, that make up the zone.

Meanwhile, Katsina-born businessman, Honourable Isah Saulawa, has declared his intention to contest the presidential election in 2019 on the platform of the PDP.

Saulawa made this disclosure while delivering a keynote address during the North West PDP social media handlers’ retreat held in his home state at the weekend.

He, however, admitted he had little political experience, but said he is motivated by his love for the nation and the desire to change the current narratives of Nigerians.
