Katsina Rep hails Daura's sack, commends Osinbajo for upholding national interest

- A lawmaker at the House of Representatives on Wednesday, August 8, said acting president Yemi Osinbajo did well by sacking Lawal Daura

- Danlami Kurfi said the action by the acting president uphold Nigeria's democracy

- According to Kurfi, the invasion of a federal institution that constitutionally enjoys parliamentary immunity by security operatives is unimaginable

A member of the House of Representatives has commended acting president, Yemi Osinbajo, for sacking the former director general of the State Security Services (SSS), Lawal Daura.

Danlami Kurfi, representing Dutsin-ma/Kurfi federal constituency said Osinbajo upheld Nigeria's interest in his action against the former DG of SSS.

Speaking to journalists in Katsina on Wednesday, August 8, Kurfi, the deputy chairman of the House committee on petroleum resources downstream said Osinbajo's action was also timely.

Kurfi, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), described Daura's action at the National Assembly as despicable.

The lawmaker said: "What happened on Tuesday is shameful and should be condemned by all lovers of democracy and I expect people not to politicise it. It was a disturbing development coloured with extreme violation of constitutional order."

"But what gladdened my heart most was that the act of barbarism on Tuesday wasn't authorised by the Presidency. I see Professor Yemi Osinbajo as a hero who will forever stand tall as a patriot for taking that great decision. It was necessary and in the best interest of Nigeria's democracy.

I strongly agree with other parliamentarians who said every Nigerian must rise and stand up to defend democracy now or suffer the consequences of a system with dictatorial tendencies," Kurfi said.

Kurfi also noted that while he have some respect for the sacked SSS boss, it is unimaginable that security operatives will invade a federal institution that constitutionally enjoys parliamentary immunity.

He said called for an investigation on the matter and adequate measures of sanction for all those involved in Tuesday's invasion at the National Assembly.

"I have a lot of respect for the ousted DG of DSS, who I always know to be highly disciplined and professional in his conduct, but what happened on Tuesday was still a surprise to some of us and I expect the Executive to dig further and get to the root of the matter. It is unbelievable that security operatives will invade a Federal institution that constitutionally enjoys parliamentary immunity.

Again, Daura shouldn't be the only man who will go down in this instance, everyone involved in this reprehensible act must be exposed and made to face the full weight of the law without delay," Kurfi said.
