NASS siege came as a surprise - IGP

- The inspector general of police, Ibrahim Idris, has spoken on the siege laid to the National Assembly by the officers of the DSS

- Idris said the Nigeria Police Force would soon issue a statement in relation to the incident

- He, however, noted that the NPF was not involved in the siege

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, on Tuesday, August 7, claimed that the siege laid to the National Assembly by the officers of the Department of State Services (DSS), reached him as a surprise.

Channels TV reports that Idris made this known after a closed-door meeting with the acting president Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The police boss added that the NASS situation was not an attack on democracy.

It was learnt that Idris said the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) was not involved in the siege.

According to him, “Obviously, like I said, I have not got a detailed brief on that. In fact we are going to issue a press release on that.’’

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the NGF condemned the siege to the National Assembly by operatives of the DSS.

Chairman of the forum, Governor Abdulaziz Yari, in a statement on Wednesday, August 8, called for the punishment of all those involved in the siege.

Speaking through the head of media of the NGF, Abdulrazaque-Bello Barkindo, the forum described the conduct of the security operatives as an aberration, Premium Times reports.

It said the siege on the National Assembly was a despicable action that challenges the core of the nations democracy and threatened Nigeria’s existence.

Governor Yari Abubakar described the National Assembly as the bastion of democracy, noting that an attack on the Assembly is an attack on the collective conscience of the country at large.

He warned against future actions by security agencies which could plunge the country into confusion.
