Lai Mohammed reacts as PDP accuses APC, FG of plotting to overthrow Saraki

- The PDP has accused the APC and the federal government of plotting to use “a fraudulent interim court order” to declare Senate president Bukola Saraki's seat vacant

- In response, Lai Mohammed said PDP's constant falsehoods was a threat to the peace and security

- He said the PDP was making allegations without proofs

The minister of information, Lai Mohammed, has described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a reckless and desperate party.

This was in reaction to allegations by the opposition that the federal government and the All Progressives Congress (APC) intend to obtain an interim court order to declare the Senate president seat vacant, following Saraki’s defection from the APC to the PDP.

Mohammed said the PDP had run out of ideas, which is why they resorted to making allegations without proof, The Cable reports.

He said: “Few days back, the PDP claimed that there were plans to invade the senate and sack Saraki. Today, they said we are planning to use the court to sack Saraki. Nigerians are tired of all these false allegations.

“The PDP is reckless and desperate. They are afraid of their own shadows. They are so troubled and have gone out of ideas and make allegations without proofs.

“This is a government that believes in the rule of law. These constant falsehoods are a threat to the peace and security of this country.”

The PDP alleged that credible information at its disposal showed that “some cabals in the presidency and APC had perfected a plan to institute a lawsuit to challenge the validity of Saraki’s seat with the sole aim of securing a fraudulent injunction to force him out of office pending the determination of the substantive suit”.

The party’s national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said in a statement on Friday, August 3, that intelligence available to the party showed that once the federal government and the APC are able to secure the injunction from a particular compromised judicial officer, they would arraign and detain the deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, on what he called trumped up charges and ensure “he is not granted bail so as to keep him out of circulation while their men would move in to effect an illegal leadership change in the Senate.

While we trust that the Chief Justice of Nigeria will protect the sanctity of our judiciary especially at this trying time in our national history, we call on the institution of the judiciary at all levels to immune itself from being used by enemies of our democracy as no house falls leaving its roof standing,” the statement read.

“This desperation by despotic forces to forcefully and illegally take control of the senate, the highest symbol of our democratic order, is nothing short of civilianised coup which must be resisted by all.

“The judiciary must therefore ensure that it is not intimidated or ensnared to be party to a desperate bid to destabilise our nation,” he added.

Recall that consequent to Saraki's recent defection to the PDP on Tuesday, July 31, the APC leadership dissolved the Kwara faction loyal to him and appointed a caretaker committee.

Soon after Saraki made his resolve official, reports emerged that the NWC of APC had issued a query to him. The APC, in a resolution signed by Mai Buni, its national secretary, said that Saraki had allegedly flouted the laws of the party at the risk of facing disciplinary measures.
