Lionel Scaloni named as interim coach of Argentina national team

- Sampaoli stepped down following Argentina's dismal outing at the World Cup

Argentina FA has appointed Lionel Scaloni as interim boss for their upcoming friendlies against Guatemala and Colombia.

The 40-year-old replaces Jorge Sampaoli who stood down last month following a disappointing World Cup.

The former West Ham star is currently in charge of Argentina's Under-17 side with fellow retired Argentine international Pablo Aimar.

A statement from the Argentine Football Association (AFA) said: "The AFA informs that after a meeting of the Executive Committee, Lionel Scaloni will coach the future friendlies along with his assistants Pablo Aimar and Martin Tocalli."

The FA president Claudio Tapia however told reporters they were going to take their time to appoint a permanent coach.

Scaloni earned a total of seven international caps for his country and also enjoyed a fine six-year spell at Serie A side Lazio.

Sampaoli left his position following Argentina's disappointing run at the World Cup after losing 4-3 to subsequent winners France.

The two-time world champions meet Guatemala in Los Angeles on September 7 and then face Colombia in New Jersey four days later.

Meanwhile, had reported Jorge Sampaoli was reportedly set to quit as Argentina coach after World Cup exit in the round of 16 following a meeting with his bosses.

Lionel Messi and his teammates scraped through Group D after drawing with debutants Iceland, losing to Croatia and edging out Nigeria in their last game.
