Since it assumed power in 2016, the Trump administration has not been on the best of terms with the media.
On Thursday, August 2, CNN's reporter, Jim Acosta, walked out of a White House press briefing after Sarah Huckabee Sanders, President Donald Trump’s press secretary, refused to confirm that the press corps is not the "enemy of the people," as Trump has repeatedly called them in the past.
"...You read off a laundry list of your concerns about the press and things you feel like are misreported," Acosta told Sanders.
"You did not say that you feel like the press is not the enemy of the people. I think it would be a good thing if you were to say, right here, at the briefing, that the press ... are not the enemy of the people."
Yahoo! News reports that Sanders then proceeded to attack Acosta and the press, particularly his own network, CNN.
Acosta, who has become a target of Trump supporters' wrath in recent weeks, then walked out of the briefing.
He explained further on Twitter the reason why he walked out of the press briefing:
Legit.ng had previously reported that President Trump earlier announced the winners of his so-called ‘Fake News’ awards.
Topping the list was the New York Times whose columnist had been singled out by Trump for claiming that the US economy would fail under the 45th president; a claim which has so far not turned out to be true.
The website where the ‘awards’ were posted by the US president crashed shortly after he tweeted the link but returned afterwards.
Trump also attacked an ABC News reporter, Brian Ross, for erroneously reporting that during the 2016 election, the president directed former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, to make contact with Russia.
The US president also took aim at TIME magazine for claiming a bust of the late great civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, was removed from the Oval Office.
