Lady who got pregnant at 19 and lost her child becomes scientist

- Senamile started university at the age of 16

- However, she fell pregnant before obtaining her degree

- Despite later losing her child, she bravely pursued her dream of becoming a nuclear physicist

31-year-old Senamile Masango is a world-renowned nuclear physicist, but she had to overcome tremendous challenges to achieve her success.

According to Move! magazine, the determined scientist from KwaNongoma in KwaZulu-Natal of South Africa, completed her matriculation at the age of 16.

She joined the University of Zululand to study Physics and Electronics, learned. However, she lost focus and fell pregnant at the age of 19.

She had to take time off from her studies to care for her daughter before resuming later. Unfortunately, tragedy struck in 2016 when her daughter was seven years old.

Senamile's daughter was hit by a car and passed away. Once again, she had to take time off to grieve, but returned just three months later.

Senamile explained:

I was mourning and doing my coursework at the same time. There were times I did not feel like going to class, as my heart was heavy with grief, but I made it in the end.

She eventually obtained her BSc and later completed her MSc in Nuclear Physics at the University of the Western Cape. She's now pursuing a PhD.

Senamile founded Women in Science and Engineering in Africa (Wise Africa). The nonprofit organisation provides mentorship to young people in the science and engineering fields.

She also offers science and mathematics lessons to Grade 10 to 12 learners at her home.

Senamile made history recently when she became the first African woman to be part of the first African-led experiment at the European Organisation for African Research (CERN).
