Tambuwal, APC spokesman, 41 state lawmakers defect to PDP - Newspaper review

The main headlines of the mainstream Nigerian newspapers for Thursday, August 2, are focused on the reactions of members of the All Progressives Congress to the defection of Senate president Bukola Saraki and two state governors.

The Nation reports that Senate president Bukola Saraki came under fire yesterday, 24 hours after he announced his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Partry (PDP).

The APC, which on Tuesday queried him for breaching Article 21 of the party’s constitution, asked him to resign his positon because the PDP is the minority party in the Senate.

The Punch reports that the national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole; and some senators elected on the platform of the party led by the Senate leader, Ahmed Lawan, on Wednesday met behind closed doors with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting came amidst the gale of defections being witnessed in the party.

Oshiomhole told State House correspondents at the end of the meeting that the right thing for the president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, is to vacate his seat, having left the party.

Vanguard reports that the federal government in its first formal response to the gale of defections from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday described the exit of Saraki, as a good riddance that would remove obstacles to the delivery of good governance.

The government’s reaction was articulated through the minister of information, culture and tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

The Guardian reports that the APC lost its national publicity secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, Governor Aminu Tambuwal, 18 out ofthe 30 Sokoto state House of Assembly members and Kano state deputy governor Hafiz Abubakar to the PDP. Also, 23 of the 24 members of the Kwara state House of Assembly crossed over to the PDP.

This Day reports that Tambuwal defected along with the speaker of the state House of Assembly, Alhaji Salihu Maidaji, and 17 other members of the assembly.
