Wolfsburg are hoping to sign Luke Shaw despite the player having no desire to leave Manchester United, according to reports.

The 23-year-old has only a year left on his current United contract and there is no indication he will be offered an extension.

The former Southampton star has also fallen out of favour under Jose Mourinho who has publicly criticised his performances on several occasion.

The England left-back will be a free agent in January and would be allowed to speak to Wolfsburg over a pre-contract agreement ahead of a free transfer in the summer.

But according to Mail Sport, the Bundesliga side are pushing for a deal in the current summer window.

Shaw was an unused substitute in United’s recent 4-1 loss to Liverpool on their pre-season tour and may not return to fitness in time for their opening Premier League match against Leicester on August 10.

He recently discussed his contract situation, telling Manchester Evening News: "I think now… I don’t think I would want to sign a contract right now. Because I want to prove to people that I deserve a contract, I don’t want to sign one because of blah, blah, blah, whatever happens in the next couple of months, I want to earn a contract and I want a contract because I deserve a contract.

"I don’t want a contract because maybe in the next year or so I’m a free agent, so maybe they might look to tie me down for that. But I want to sign a contract because I deserve it and the club want me to sign one."

Martial quit the United’s pre-season tour last week to be in Paris for the birth of his child but Mourinho was expecting him to return which he refused.
