Police involved in plot to impeach Governor Ortom - PDP alleges

- PDP says eight lawmakers loyal to former governor George Akume have been escorted into the Benue state House of Assembly complex by the police

- The party states that it is unlawful and highly unconstitutional for eight out of 30 Assembly members to propose an impeachment against Governor Ortom

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Nigerian police of being an interested party in the alleged plot to impeach Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state.

The party in a tweet on Monday, July 30, said eight lawmakers loyal to former governor, George Akume, were escorted into the state House of Assembly complex by the police, while 17 others believed to be PDP members were barred from the complex.

The opposition described the alleged role played by the police in the said plot to impeach the state governor as completely unacceptable.

It said it was unlawful and highly unconstitutional for eight out of 30 Assembly members to propose an impeachment against Governor Ortom

The party asked Nigerians to hold the presidency responsible for any breakdown of law and order resulting from the allege move to remove the Benue state governor.

Legit.ng had earlier reported that eight out of 30 lawmakers in Benue state House of Assembly have reportedly served an impeachment notice on Governor Samuel Ortom.

Tahav Agerzua, a spokesperson for Governor Ortom told Premium Times at 10am on Monday, July 30, that the eight lawmakers have also taken over the premises of the state parliament with the alleged support of the police.

Legit.ng gathered that Agerzua claimed that George Akume, a former governor and an APC senator from Benue state, was the one who brought police officers from Abuja to attempt to use eight lawmakers to impeach a governor in a House of 30 lawmakers.
