- Ronaldo has been slapped with a suspended two year jail sentence for tax evasion
- Although he will not see the inside of a prison cell, Ronaldo will part ways with €19 million
- This is after he struck a deal with Spanish tax authorities to plead guilty of tax fraud
Juventus summer signing Cristiano Ronaldo has accepted a two-year prison sentence with £16.9 million fine after being found guilty of tax fraud while in Spain.
Although, the five time ballon d'Or winner will not be serving jail term according to Spanish law because he didn't get more than two years sentence.
The former Real Madrid superstar pleaded guilty to four charges of evasion between 2011 and 2014, worth a total of £13 million according to SunSport.
The 33-year-old has now agreed to pay a sum of £16.9 million to finally put the issue behind him as he looks forward to a new life in Italy starting from next month.
During his reign at the Santiago Bernabeu, Ronaldo won four Champions League titles among other domestic and continental cups.
The Portuguese star’s management company Gestifute initially denied the allegations and he had gone on to avoid any comments on the subject throughout numerous press conferences during his time in Spain.
Further reports indicate the deal involved Ronaldo avoiding jail if he pleaded guilty to the tax fraud charges. The fact that he is a first time offender also played in his favor in avoiding setting foot in prison.
Ronaldo’s greatest rival Lionel Messi also faced similar charges in 2017 and he was sentenced to a 21 month jail term with a sum of £2 million while his father bagged a £1.5m fin for the same offence.
Part of the factors that heavily played in Ronaldo’s decision to ditch Spain for Italian football included the manner in which he felt authorities were handling his tax situation.
Ronaldo was allegedly growing increasingly fed up with the hefty tax imposed on star foreign footballers such as himself and Italy came calling with far more favorable tax conditions.
