Unai Emery tasted his first defeat as Arsenal manager after losing 3-1 on penalties to Atletico Madrid following a 1-1 draw on regulation time.

Argentine striker Luciano Vietto scored a fine header towards the end of the first half and Smith Rowe got the equalizer immediately after the restart.

The Gunners eventually lost the match on penalties, as Atletico substitute goalkeeper Antonio Adan saved from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Joel Willock and Eddie Nketiah before scoring the deciding spot-kick.
