Naval personnel arrested by police for allegedly stealing transformer from Tompolo's yard in Delta

- The police has arrested a naval personnel for allegedly stealing a transformer from Government Ekpemupolo's yard

- The naval personnel, Lance Corporal Usman Shaibu, was nabbed on Sunday, July 22

- He was arrested alongside two other accomplices at the scene of the crime

A naval personnel, Lance Corporal Usman Shaibu, and two others have been arrested by policemen in Warri for allegedly stealing a transformer from the jetty of ex-MEND leader, Government Ekpemupolo aka Tompolo.

Vanguard reports that the crime took place near the Chevron Clinic in Edjeba community in Warri South local government area of Delta state. gathers that Shaibu and a driver of a Mercedez Benz Self-loader, Okugbe Lucky, and his conductor, Chime Chukwuka, were arrested on Sunday, July 22, at about 7pm.

According to report, two other accomplices, also naval personnel, Staff Sergeant PO Ekon and Sergeant LS Elijah, escaped from the scene of the crime and are currently on the run.

The incident was confirmed by the younger brother of ex-Niger Delta Freedom Fighter, Honourable George Ekpemupolo.

He said: “They arrived at about 6:45pm. I was called by somebody at Chevron Clinic saying he saw people entering Tompolo’s yard with self-loader and that I should come and confirm if we have sold the things in the yard. I immediately called the police and when we got there, they were already carrying the transformer.

The naval personnel, lance corporal was arrested with the driver and conductor of the self-loader. The naval pleaded that we take the matter easy with him but I insisted he should be arrested and taken to the police station for questioning and prosecution.”

According to Lance Corporal Shaibu, who was said to have confessed to the crime, they were going to sell the stolen transformer at the rate of N700,000.

Confirming the incident, the Delta state commissioner of police, Muhammad Mustafa, said: "It’s confirmed, the arrest of a naval personnel. But he is in our custody. The commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta, Commodore Ibrahim Dewu said the Navy is trying to confirm the report."

Meanwhile, previously reported that the Oyo state police command on Thursday, May 24, paraded a naval officer, soldiers and an ex-policeman among others for robbery, kidnapping and other crimes.

Speaking with newsmen at police headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, the commissioner of police, Abiodun Odude, said the naval officer was arrested with 12 members of his gang, who had been on the wanted list of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos.
