NYSC certificate scandal: CSGGG urges FG to tread carefully on Adeosun’s case

- The alleged forgery of NYSC discharge certificate by the minister of finance, Kemi Adeosun, is still a trending topic

- The minister has however been quiet about the topic even as media reports continue to beam searchlight on the issue

- A civil society group wants the government to tread with caution in handling the issue

The Civil Society Groups for Good Governance (CSGGG) has reacted to the ongoing certificate scandal involving the finance minister, Kemi Adeosun.

Adeosun, 51, has in the last few weeks, been a subject of controversy as a report by an online newspaper indicated that her National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) certificate was forged.

The Ogun state-born minister has been silent on the issue, while the federal government has since set up a panel to probe the authenticity of the media report.

In a statement sent to Legit.ng, CSGGG president, Comrade Dominic Ogakwu, commended the government for taking the step to uncover the truth, but cautioned the government against victimising the minister, stressing that the infractions in the certificate were clearly not her fault.

Part of the statement read: “We are aware that the minister has since explained that she didn’t know the certificate was fake. We are also aware has taken full responsibility for the forgery, but has pleaded for understanding.

“Indeed, as an individual who studied abroad, Mrs. Adeosun couldn’t have detected that the certificate was fake. She was only trying to fulfill the requirements that enables her to be eligible for any public office.

“We at CSGSGG commend the government for setting up a panel to probe the report, but we urge the government not to throwaway the baby with the bath water, bearing in mind the minister’s achievements since she came on board."

Comrade Ogakwu stated that Adeosun is a victim of a cabal hell-bent on tarnishing her image, stressing that "her policies in the last three years have tightened the noose on the nation’s treasury and disappointed the pilferers of our economy."

We call on the government to forgive and forget and allow Adeosun complete the good work she has started as regards the Nigerian economy which is on its way to being completely revived, thanks to the minister’s ingenuity, hard- work and effective policies," he concluded.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a former director general of the NYSC, Maharazu Tsiga, declared that the agency could not have made the grave mistake of exempting Adeosun.
