- Ahead of the 2019 general elections, the vice chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Olanrewaju Fagbohun predicted that Nigeria is soon to experience trouble
- Fagbohun said that doom, implosion and violence will be the order of the day come 2019, if nothing is done about the rampant insecurity in Nigeria
- However, he said that such situations can be avoided if politicians can refrain from the use of hate and inflammatory speeches against their opponents
With the 2019 general election fast approaching, Olanrewaju Fagbohun, the vice chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), on Wednesday, July 19, said that there are clear indications of avoidable trouble in the nearest future, the Sun reports.
Fagbohun urged stakeholders of the approaching polls to desist from hate speeches associated with electioneering.
The vice chancellor, represented by his deputy, Damola Oke, stated that Nigeria is at the brink of disintegration. He therefore appealed for an immediate solution to attend to the issues involved.
He stressed that the pragmatists have a ready duty to make politicians and their supporters know messages can be passed to the electorate through civil and hate-free comments.
Fagbohun said: ’’This is one of the challenges that have plagued our electoral system. At the heart of all these is appropriateness of language use upon which the survival of our nation depends’’.
“Few of us will not doubt that our nation is on the edge of precipice of monumental self implosion if nothing urgent is done to enhance inter-ethnic understanding and harmony and check the spate of mindless killings across our nation.”
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the southern states had said that the poor condition of security in the nation, especially in the north central region, is threat for the smooth running of the 2019 presidential election.
CAN said that the constant killings in the country indicates a complete collapse of the security system.
