- Kilibi Mokhonwane didn't go to initiation school as a young girl
- As a result, other women looked down on her
- She finally went to this year's initiation school and has returned from the mountain
A 52-year-old woman has just returned from the mountain, proving that it's never too late to go to initiation school.
Kilibi Mokhonwane, from Mmametlhake in Mpumalanga, is the oldest woman to undergo the cultural process in the province this season, Legit.ng learned.
According to Daily Sun, Kilibi never got a chance to attend initiation school as a young girl because of poverty.
Kilibi explained: "My family didn’t have money to send me. I watched all my friends and peers in my village go. I felt as if I was a nobody. I am a happy woman now."
As a result of missing out, other women, even those who were younger than her, often looked down on her. This continued even after she got married and had a child.
The determined woman therefore promised herself that she would go through the ritual no matter how old she was.
Although her decision raised eyebrows, she is now respected after returning from the mountains over the weekend. According to reports, initiation rites are important for many South Africans.
