Fayemi's victory is the triumph of the will of the people - Group

- The outcome of the governorship election in Ekiti state has been described by a group as the triumph of the will of the people

The Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate (CPPM) has described the outcome of the Saturday, July 14 gubernatorial election in Ekiti state as the triumph of the will of the people.

In a statement signed by its chairman, Nelson Ekujimi, and sent to, the group congratulated the good people of the state for turning out en masse peacefully and orderly to elect a new governor. gathers that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was commended by the group for its timely and appropriate deployment of men and materials to all the polling stations across the 16 local government council areas of the state which kick-started accreditation and voting simultaneously at about 8am generally.

CPPM said: "We are also glad to report that the functionality of the E-card reader on election day was generally commendable. The INEC ad-hoc staffs exhibited high level of responsibility, discipline and professionalism in the handling of materials and equipment which is a reflection of the top level training impacted on them.

"By it's superlative performance in the conduct of the 2018 Ekiti state gubernatorial election and announcement of result which is indisputably a reflection of the will of the people as expressed at the polls, INEC has demonstrated its readiness and ability to deliver on it's constitutional mandate in line with global best practices in future elections.

"We equally commend the media for a job well done by it's unbiased and professional reportage and coverage of the election in fulfillment of their constitutional function.

"We commend the winner of the election, Dr Kayode Fayemi of the all Progressive Congress (APC) and urge him to be magnanimous in victory, while at the same time, admonishing the losers to be gallant in defeat to rally round the incoming government for the collective good of the Ekiti people."

The group, however, noted that the election was characterised by vote buying across board, which it said was sad and unfortunate.

It said: "This unomplimentary development is a time bomb which is a threat to the existence of our democracy and society, hence there is urgent need for us all as a people to educate and sensitise ourselves on the essence of voting, so as to be able to exercise the right to vote on election day, based on one's conviction about the integrity, character and performance of the candidates rather than being swayed by primordial sentiments and induced monetarily, this is a task that confronts us menacingly in the face and which is surmountable for posterity sake."

Meanwhile, previously reported that supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Dr Kayode Fayemi took to the streets in Ekiti following his declaration as governor-elect of the state.

Fayemi won the gubernatorial election which took place on Saturday, July 14 to defeat his closest rival, Professor Kolapo Olusola of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
