Jose Mourinho has criticised Raheem Sterling's World Cup performances for England, saying he was not 'good enough' to be selected for the third-place play-off.

The Manchester United manager acting who was acting as a pundit claimed Sterling should have been benched by Marcus Rashford, Jamie Vardy or Danny Welbeck in the team against Belgium.

Sterling who started six games for the Three Lions, who finished fourth in Russia, but failed to score a goal throughout the tournament.

And the Portuguese gaffer was unimpressed with the Manchester City star's performances on the biggest stage, suggesting he was worn down mentally and physically.

Mourinho told RT: "He didn't have a good enough World Cup to be chosen for a match ahead of Vardy, Welbeck, Rashford – people with probably better condition from a physical and psychological point of view."

Sterling was substituted by Rashford in the second half as England went on to lose 2-0 to Belgium, with the goals coming from Thomas Meunier and Eden Hazard.

The 23-year-old has failed to score for England since October 2015. He now has just two goals in 44 caps.

The former Liverpool star scored 23 goals and 17 assists for Pep Guardiola's side in all competitions last season but the title-winning campaign appeared to have taken its toll on him.

Mourinho also criticised Gareth Southgate's goalkeeping selection claiming Jack Butland or Nick Pope should have been given a game instead of Jordan Pickford.

The Portuguese added: "I think also for a second goalkeeper to feel I didn't even play in the third match of the group phase, I'm not playing in the third vs fourth match, when can I play.

"I think it's quite frustrating for a guy like Butland or Pope."

Meanwhile, had earlier reported that Belgium were 2-0 victors over England in the third place playoffs played on Saturday.

Thomas Meunier set the ball rolling in the fourth minute and captain Eden Hazard made it two eight minutes from time.
